Former Mediator Advocates for Family Rights

Former mediator, Emily Gallup, is working to ensure appropriate intervention is occurring in Nevada County family courts, and has suggestions for domestic violence victims. Family court hears cases for domestic violence and abuse, divorce, paternity, child custody, support and visitation. The court provides access to mediators so parties can work out family issues.

One of Emily’s goals is to advise parties of their rights, and how to be prepared for mediation. She emphasizes that parties involved in domestic violence cases have the right to mediate in separate rooms, and may have a support person present. Emily advises parties to make sure their mediators are familiar with the history of their cases, and that serious issues, such as domestic violence, are addressed. Emily says parties should not feel pressured into an agreement they don’t want to make. If a party is uncomfortable with the recommendation, Emily advises them to tell the judge and why.
